Dedicated council care and support worker recognised with prestigious award

A dedicated Denbighshire County Council care and support worker has been recognised with a prestigious WeCare Wales award for her outstanding commitment to improving the lives of older people.

Maxine Carr, who has worked at Nant y Môr Extra Care for 12 years, was named a winner at the WeCare Wales Awards following a nomination from Deputy Team Manager, Rob Gilmour.

Maxine was recognised for the exceptional impact she has made in creating opportunities for residents, families, and the wider community to come together through a varied programme of social events and activities.

From Macmillan coffee mornings and themed takeaway evenings to Halloween celebrations and Christmas jumper parties, Maxine has played a leading role in organising events that bring people together and help combat loneliness and isolation.

Working closely with local businesses and community members, she secures donations and catering support to ensure each event is a success.

Rob Gilmour, Deputy Team Manager said:

“Without Maxine’s events, many residents would have limited opportunities for social interaction. Maxine isn’t just organising events, she is building bridges, nurturing relationships and improving lives.”

The benefits of Maxine’s work have been felt throughout the Nant y Môr community, with residents, families, friends, neighbours and staff all enjoying the welcoming and inclusive atmosphere she has helped create.

One resident said:

“The events have brought me out of my shell and given me more confidence socialising with others.”

The success of the activities was also highlighted during a recent Care Inspectorate Wales inspection, which rated the service as excellent. Inspectors noted residents’ enthusiasm for the programme of events, commenting:

“People told us they loved the recent Chinese banquet night and are looking forward to the next one.”

Alongside her work organising community events, Maxine is committed to her own professional development. She recently attended ‘Making Sense: Care and Creativity’ training and has been gaining experience in other areas of the service to further develop her knowledge and skills in supporting people living with dementia.

Councillor Elen Heaton, Lead Member for Health and Social Care, said:

“Congratulations to Maxine for this wonderful achievement. The positive impact she has on residents, colleagues and the wider Nant y Môr community clearly shines through, and it’s fantastic see this recognised.”

Ann Lloyd, Head of Service, Adult Social Care and Homelessness said:

“I’d like to congratulate Maxine on her award and thanks to her for her continued dedication to supporting residents at Nant y Môr Extra Care.

Maxine embodies the values of Denbighshire County Council and demonstrates the positive impact that care and support workers have every day within our communities.

Congratulations on this fantastic achievement.”
