Denbighshire County Council to begin active travel improvements in Lower Denbigh

Denbighshire County Council will begin works to introduce a series of active travel enhancements in Lower Denbigh.

The works, which are grant funded from the Regional Transport Fund, aim to reduce the number of short everyday journeys that are taken in motor vehicles and increase levels of active travel in Denbighshire.

These enhancements will create safer walking and cycling routes to key local amenities and enable people to make healthier, greener, and cheaper travel choices.

The Active Travel improvement works will begin on Monday, 20 July and are expected to be completed by the autumn.

The project will include:

  • Improved pedestrian safety at the Clwyd Avenue junction and Ystrad Road junction.
  • Upgrading the existing pedestrian crossing on Ruthin Road to a toucan crossing for pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Widening the footways, on Ruthin Road, between Clwyd Avenue and Ystrad Road.
  • Improving the entrance to the Denbighshire Leisure car park from Ystrad Road, to create a safer, more pedestrian-friendly access.
  • Please note: the car park entrance will be closed for approximately four weeks while these works are carried out, with the closure starting from Monday, 20 July.
  • Widening the footway leading to Ysgol y Parc access road to improve safety for children travelling to and from the school.

Ysgol Y Parc, Headteacher Liz Croft said: “At Ysgol y Parc Infant School, we are delighted to see the investment being made to improve the local area and the road safety measures surrounding our school. These improvements demonstrate a commitment to creating a safer, healthier and more accessible environment for our children, families, and the wider community.

“The enhanced crossing facilities will make a significant difference to the safety of pedestrians, giving families greater confidence when walking to and from school and the narrowing of Ruthin Road will help to calm traffic, creating a safer environment for everyone travelling through the area.

“These developments strongly support the Welsh Government's vision for increasing active travel by encouraging more children and families to walk, cycle and scoot to school. As a school, we are passionate about promoting healthy lifestyles and reducing our environmental impact, and these improvements will help us continue to embed these values within our daily school life.

“The changes also align closely with the Curriculum for Wales, particularly in supporting our pupils to become healthy, confident individuals who understand the importance of physical wellbeing, road safety and caring for the environment. We look forward to seeing the positive impact these improvements will have on our pupils, families, and the community for many years to come.”

Councillor Barry Mellor, Lead Member for Environment and Transport said: “The introduction of a series of new active travel enhancement is a welcome addition to Denbigh. Not only is active travel creating safer walking routes for our most vulnerable road users such as the elderly and children, but it will also encourage residents to lower their carbon footprint by choosing to walk over driving short distances.”

The council apologises for any inconvenience caused and thanks residents for their patience while these important improvements are completed.
