Improvements planned for Barkby Beach car park in Prestatyn

Plans have been developed to improve Barkby Beach car park at the eastern end of Prestatyn’s shoreline, creating a more accessible, durable and better-drained parking facility.

Plans have been developed to improve Barkby Beach car park at the eastern end of Prestatyn’s shoreline, creating a more accessible, durable and better-drained parking facility.

Primarily used as an overflow facility during periods of peak demand, the car park will be upgraded to improve drainage, accessibility and its overall condition, while providing infrastructure to support future improvements.

Work is due to start from 5 October 2026 and is expected to be substantially complete during the week commencing 7 December 2026, subject to weather conditions and any unforeseen operational constraints.

The project will include resurfacing the existing car park with a permeable gravel grid system and constructing a new vehicular access route.

Together, these measures are intended to improve surface-water management, enhance accessibility and provide a more durable parking facility.

The main elements of the works include:

  • General site clearance.
  • Excavation of existing compacted subbase and topsoil.
  • Construction of a new footway.
  • Construction of two uncontrolled tactile pedestrian crossings.
  • Kerbing works.
  • Installation of new road markings.
  • Carriageway construction.
  • Installation of permeable gravel grid surfacing.

Councillor James Elson, Lead Member for the Environment and Transport, said: “These improvements will make Barkby Beach car park more accessible, resilient and better equipped to manage surface water. It will provide a more durable facility for residents and visitors to the area during busy periods, while also supporting  future improvements at the site.”
