Partnership continues litter clear drive at county beach

A partnership event has returned to Rhyl beach to help crack down on littering.

Denbighshire County Council’s Flood Risk Team, with equipment supplied by Keep Wales Tidy and supported by big-hearted volunteers, carried out a recent litter pick around the sands and promenade behind the Rhyl Pavilion car park.

These events at Rhyl also Prestatyn have been organised to help tackle the impact of marine litter in the area which can block up waterways and drainage, stopping the flow of water, leading to higher risks of localised flooding further upstream.

Thirteen volunteers helped collect eight full bags of litter off the beach and also assisted in removing a lead pipe from the area as well.

Claudia Smith, Coastal Erosion and Flood Risk Officer, said: “Once again we are really grateful to everyone joined this event at Rhyl.  All of us are working together to address the impact of marine litter in the area, especially during peak weeks, which can block waterways and drainage, halting the flow of water and leading to higher risks of localised flooding further upstream.

“Taking litter off the beach also helps natural defences such as shorelines, dunes and seagrass beds, as they are able to better maintain their natural function as defences against the sea. What this group has also done is help improve the environment for local residents and visitors to this section of Rhyl’s sands.”
