Tree Nursery opens doors for National Tree Week

Denbighshire County Council is inviting visitors to discover how trees are grown from seed during a guided tour of its tree nursery on 26 November, from 11am to 1pm, to celebrate National Tree Week.
The tour will take place at Denbighshire County Council Tree Nursery, Greengates Farm, Cwttir Lane, St. Asaph, LL17 0LF, during National Tree Week, which runs from 21 to 29 November.
Visitors will learn about the different requirements of trees such as oak and hawthorn, and how techniques including sieving and floating are used to process seed.
The community nursery specialises in collecting locally sourced tree seed and growing trees to maturity. The guided tour will offer a look behind the scenes at its seed collection and propagation techniques.
Run by the council’s Biodiversity and Ecology team, the nursery grows 35,000 trees a year and has capacity for 80,000. Its work supports efforts to address the nature and climate emergency declared by the Welsh Government.
The nursery grows rare and endangered species including black poplar, aspen, wild service tree and small-leaved lime. Most of its trees are currently planted on the surrounding nature reserve, which also has a beaver enclosure, with beavers due to arrive.
The tour will show how the team and volunteers collect and propagate trees from seed, creating opportunities for biodiversity to establish and thrive.
Councillor James Elson, Lead Member for the Environment and Transport, said: “I would encourage people to come along this National Tree Week and discover the work taking place at our tree nursery. This tour is an opportunity to see how locally collected seeds are grown into trees and learn more about the care involved.
“The nursery’s work is important in supporting biodiversity. By growing locally sourced trees, including rare species, the team and volunteers are helping to create opportunities for nature to thrive.
