Binnie Mouse helps Ysgol Bodnant pupils learn the power of recycling

Ysgol Bodnant pupils had a recent special visit from ‘Binnie Mouse’ to help them understand the positive powers of recycling.

Denbighshire County Council’s Recycling Education Team visited the school to help pupils understand the benefits of recycling and how to recycle correctly at home and in school.

The team spoke to Year 6 pupils about the benefits of recycling for households, local communities, and the wider environment.

Recycling mascots Troli-bob and Cadi also joined the visit, helping to bring the message to life and encouraging pupils to think about the materials that can be collected and recycled each week.

The pupils then took part in practical sessions to learn how simple it can be to separate recyclable items using the Council’s service. The activities included a recycling game designed to help pupils understand which materials can be reused and the correct containers where they need to go to support everyday efforts to reduce waste.

Pupils were then introduced to ‘Binnie Mouse’ one of the Waste and Recycling Service vehicles used to collect recyclable materials from homes across the county.

During the tour, they were shown how different materials are collected and separated into compartments before being taken for processing at the Waste Transfer Station in Denbigh.

The Council’s Trolibocs system helps residents separate materials at the kerbside, including paper, cans and mixed plastics, and glass bottles and jars. Separating recyclable materials helps improve the quality of recycling collected and supports efforts to reduce waste and carbon emissions.

Jonathan Brittain-Hughes, Environmental Crime Manager at Denbighshire County Council, said: “Ysgol Bodnant engaged really positively with our team to find out how their everyday actions can make a real difference. Helping young people understand the importance of recycling supports our wider work to reduce waste, improve recycling rates, and protect our local environment.”

Councillor James Elson, Lead Member for the Environment and Transport, said: “Working with schools is extremely important to help how we recycle as these children are the future of Denbighshire. It is great to hear how these pupils are proactively taking up the challenge to recycle as their efforts will make a really difference to our local communities.”
