Update on Ruthin public realm improvement works

Denbighshire County Council can confirm that Ruthin Festival will be going ahead as planned, with the main event on St Peter’s Square taking place on Saturday 4 July 2026.

As the current phase of public realm improvement works are set to be completed ahead of the main event, the council is reaffirming the commitment made when planning the works to ensure that the festival and the period leading up to Christmas, including the Christmas Extravaganza, would not be affected.

The Council and OBR Construction have supported the Festival Committee with the traffic management arrangements for the event and are working closely with the organisers to ensure that the preparations for the day are complete.

Whilst works are progressing well, with Well Street reopening to one way traffic by the end of June, some changes have been made to the design to increase the strength of the pavement construction. This has resulted in a cost increase which will be fully met by contingency funds within the grant funding for the project.

Owing to the extra work involved, the decision has been made to accelerate progress on some phases of the work to make the most of the better weather over the summer. However, this change of design will see the forecast construction completion date extend to the end of January 2027. In other words, after stopping works for the Extravaganza and build-up to the Christmas period, works will restart in early January.

This design change will increase the longevity of the paving and make it more resilient to damage. In turn, this will help maintain the attractive appearance of the paving long into the future and minimise the need for any future remedial works to undertake repairs.

Further information on the project will be shared in due course regarding the revised programme of works, so that businesses and residents have advance notice of where and when works are taking place, and of associated diversion routes.
